Decorative Concrete: Out with the Old, In with the New

Sunday, October 2nd, 2011

Concrete was once just a dull and grey construction material. That has been a reality of the past for several years now – concrete has acquired a new reputation as a versatile designing material. A combination of innovative methods and techniques are now used in the concrete industry to produce truly beautiful effects, you would never guess it was just concrete! Landscaping in Utah is only more exciting with this truly revolutionizing industry.

Some popular techniques used on concrete can include any combination of staining, stamping, coloring, sealing, polishing, and resurfacing. Staining is the collection of techniques using acid-based chemical stains that make concrete resemble marble, wood or any of the natural landscaping rocks in Utah. Stamping concrete is a method of imprinting patterns into concrete causing it to look like other highly textured and patterned materials such as brick, pebbles, tiles, slate, and wood. Concrete’s malleability makes it possible for you to get almost any pattern and look you like.

Color is a fundamental element in decorative concrete design. There are a great variety of colors to choose from, creating endless decorative possibilities for your outdoors Utah landscaping construction, or indoor flooring. Numerous techniques in concrete coloring further diversify your decorative options, with considerations such as high or low intensity dyes, color release agents, integral colors, color hardeners, and more.

Sealing concrete refers to the process of applying sealant to a designed concrete surface. The main purposes of sealing concrete, as you can probably guess, are protection and color enhancement. A concrete decorator must consider a variety of crucial circumstances when selecting appropriate sealants. He will have to consider safety; desired gloss; correct surface temperature for application; and how long the sealant will last in the given environment.

Polishing concrete includes mechanical rather than chemical techniques of achieving high luster and smoothness. Concrete decorators can polish concrete using a surface grinding technique, similar to that used in the stone and marble industry to create a refined and polished effect. The visual effect is akin to the smooth, glossy, luster-full quality that you are probably accustomed to associating with marble flooring.

Another area of decorative concrete application is concrete resurfacing. Using overlays, you have the option of transforming that old, dull, cracked concrete on your driveway to an expensive-looking, vibrant surface with your desired imprint pattern and color. The ground will look entirely new.

You can use decorative concrete to construct sidewalks, walkways, patio floors, driveways, garage floors, basketball courts, steps, and much more in your Utah landscaping project. Indoors, your options continue to be limitless with tons of designer ideas and truly one-of-a-kind and exquisite masterpieces in any room you desire. Decorative concrete can even be applied to non-floor structures like fireplaces and sinks.

One of the most highly regarded landscaping companies in Utah, All States Landscaping offers the competitive service of decorative concrete in this innovative and versatile industry. You can rest assured that All States’ concrete experts, who are fully licensed, will do their jobs with precision, specialization, and efficiency, leaving you in wonder and in awe at the transformation that has taken place before your eyes.

When Winter is Coming, Don’t Let Your Lawn Go

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

The leaves of trees begin to boast radiant hues of yellows, oranges, browns and reds, announcing the change of the seasons and the coming of a time when everything must go to rest.  As the life around your home prepares to go to sleep, you should also prepare, making sure that the return of spring will bring healthy and vibrant surprises.  Your lawn is like an organism, not simply some grass covered by snow.  The sustenance of a beautiful lawn continues to require attentive care even in the fall and winter months.  There are a number of pre-winter activities to busy yourself with in the proper preparation of your lawn for the coming of winter.

First, find out what kind of grass your lawn has.  Different types will require different management.  There are cool season grasses, like the Kentucky bluegrass, that are tolerant of cool weather but go dormant in very hot months, and there are warm season grasses, like Buffalograss, that love heat, but cannot stand the cold.  Warm season grasses need to be properly prepped before winter for the following spring when they emerge from dormancy.

Your lawn will need air and sun all throughout winter.  Achieving a good grass height after the grass stops growing will help with this, so continue to mow your lawn in the fall months until the grass has stopped growing and goes into dormancy.  Two inches above soil is a good average height.  If the grass is too short, it will be made vulnerable to winter breeze and sun.  If it is too long, it can get bended over on itself by heavy snow, or winds, causing too much moisture and the possibility of fungus growth.  When you have stopped mowing, be sure to get your equipment serviced so that it is ready and in good condition for the return of spring.

It is good to do some pruning and cleaning up of your Utah yard.  Pruning should be done after the leaves on plants have turned, announcing dormancy.  Pruning your Utah shrubs and plants at this time will encourage good new growth when spring returns.  Consult a Utah landscaping professional to find out which plants respond best to pruning.  Cleaning up your yard and raking leaves will not only maintain the clean appearance of your lawn but will prevent the leaves from suffocating grass roots and causing too much moisture and rot in the winter.  Your typical weed control maintenance should now take winter weeds into consideration.  If left alone, winter weeds will return strong at the first sign of spring.  Weed your lawn and garden areas as usual just before winter and consider weed control products specific to cold weather weeds.  Edging your flowerbeds will also save you weeding time when spring returns.

Fall is also a good time to reseed your grass for spring, especially in areas that are patchy.  The seeds will be ready to push out new grass blades in the spring.  A soil test is also a good thing to start with, letting you know the exact fertile status of your soil, helping you to determine what mineral nutrients your soil is lacking, and saving you money on fertilization products you may not need.

Fall fertilization is of paramount importance, and is the most important fertilization for the year for warm season grasses.  Although the grass ceases to grow in its dormant winter phase, the roots are still growing.  Fertilization helps to strengthen the roots throughout the winter so that when spring comes back, the new grass blades produced will be of a vibrant and excellent quality.  Employ the services of one of the best Utah landscaping companies to help determine the fertilization needs of your lawn.

Although the lawn is dormant during the winter, it is still alive and along with sun and air will also need a moderate degree of moisture.  If there is no rainfall in the winter, you should irrigate the lawn.  Doing this just before a hard freeze will help to eliminate “freeze injury” to the grass.  When the lawn is moist, its temperature is not as easily affected by cold temperatures.

Fall preparation for winter and the coming spring is one of the most important times to maintain your lawn, so just because winter comes to wrap everything in blankets of snow and chill, and your lawn goes into sleep-full dormancy, don’t just let it go!  Call All States Landscaping, one of the highest-quality Utah landscaping companies, and ask about their services.  The work you do in these months will be wonderfully rewarded with a lush and lively lawn, worthy of talk next spring!

Why it’s a Good Idea to Get Input from a Landscape Designer

Tuesday, August 16th, 2011

So you watch a program about rice terraces in the mountains of China, and marvel at the beauty and genius of the step-like constructions.  You look out your back window at that steep backyard slope that always makes the rain run down and settle into a muddy pool at the bottom.  You can see a terrace garden on that slope full of your favorite plants and maybe some kind of irrigation system – but how? Or maybe you were looking through a magazine and were inspired by the traditional rock garden techniques of Japanese Zen Buddhists.  Where would you even start to install a rock garden design like those you saw in the magazine?  There are so many options in Utah landscaping design, whether you want something simple and functional for a family house or an elaborate and stately appearance.  Along with those many options come many factors to consider.  It is always great and satisfying when you can tackle a project all on your own, but it gets more complicated when you are dealing with the logistics of natural elements.  If you do not have the knowledge about techniques and tools to use, nor do you understand the soil, and the science of irrigation, nor which plant life work most harmoniously together, you might be getting yourself into a fix.  With any new landscape design, it is best to consult a professional.

Utah landscaping companies have professionals on staff that have had years of experience. Not only are they trained and skilled in landscaping design but they also have hands-on experience with actual designing and a broad base of industry knowledge, techniques, tricks of the trade, and trends.  It is a landscaper’s job to figure out how to manifest a customer’s vision using his knowledge as a measure of reasonability.  He may advise and suggest for or against something you have in mind, based on considerations from his expertise, but ultimately his job is to strive to make you fully satisfied and happy.

Without all of this expertise, you may end up making choices you are not satisfied with.  In the long run you may sacrifice quality and end up spending more money fixing costly problems.  Common mistakes that do-it-yourself landscapers make are often based on a lack of foresight and not enough pre-planning or research.  It is important to think about how your landscape design will wear through the years and the seasons.  Maybe you’ve planted lovely shrubs beneath the wide, low windows of your living room, attracted to them for their pretty blossoms and their hardiness but neglected to consider the growth behaviors of the plant.  After a year or so, you notice that the shrubs need constant pruning if you are to see out of your windows.  What you did not know is that that particular variety would shoot several feet a year, and after a while would require high maintenance.

A landscape designer, on the other hand, would have the professional expertise to consider all of those factors, and supply you a choice list of lovely shrubs that have slow growth or that generally remain at a low height.  An example mistake like this one will cost you time, energy and money in the long run trying to maintain those out-of-control shrubs!  Another example is perhaps planting Fruitless Mulberry tree in a lovely area of your front yard.  Having done the research, you selected this tree for its purported easy maintenance and adaptability, fast growth, ornamental beauty and the wonderful and romantic shade you will get from its weeping branches.  What you did not think to check however is that this beautiful tree has a shallow root system and the location you selected to put it is right near a pipe main.  Given that roots tend towards where there is water, this tree’s roots will find its way into the sewer pipes and before you know it, you are spending plenty of dollars on the cost of pipe damage.  A Utah landscaping designer could help you find a tree that is easy to maintain, fast-growing, provides excellent shade and has ornamental beauty – but – he will also consider the location of the underground piping system and home infrastructure as well as the root behavior of the tree species.  His expertise will save you tons of time and energy that you would otherwise spend trying to do the research yourself without overlooking the small, but important, details.

The truth of the matter is that without very thorough research, there may be a number of things you will typically overlook or neglect to consider.  There are ideas, facts, and resources that a Utah landscaping company brings to the table that you can only appreciate.  The added comfort of having someone to call on with questions, concerns or problems is a satisfying advantage.  All States Landscaping can help you with all your design plans for landscaping in Utah transforming the space you live, work or play in and keeping a smile on your face.
